University of Minnesota students may initiate (or activate) their Internet accounts here. When you have finished, select Submit at the bottom of the page. For security reasons, exit from your Web browser at the end of any session in which you enter or change your password or other personal information.

The information requested on this screen is used to verify your identity and student eligibility for an Internet account. Disclosure of your social security number is voluntary. If you do not have a Social Security number or do not wish to disclose it, you may activate an Internet account by visiting any Tech Stop where you will be required to verify your identity in person with a photo identification card.

Passwords are vital to computing safety. Here are some tips for choosing a good password.

Passwords must:

  • Not contain all or any three character part of the user's account name.
  • Not contain the user's first name, middle name, or last name.
  • Be from 8-125 characters in length (some client software is limited to 32).
  • Contain characters from three of the following four categories:
    • English uppercase letters (A through Z)
    • English lowercase letters (a through z)
    • Digits (0 through 9)
    • Nonalphanumeric characters (e.g., !, #, %)
  • Not end in a space, although they may contain spaces (e.g. '3 Brown mice')
