Tandem Project Archives

The Tandem Project

The Tandem Project was founded by Michael Roan (1938 – 2014) in 1986 to build understanding and respect for diversity of religion or belief, as well as to prevent discrimination in matters relating to freedom of religion or belief.  The Tandem Project sponsored multiple conferences, curricula, reference materials and programs on Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights – Everyone shall have the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion - and 1981 United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief.

Lifting the Spirit: Human Rights and Freedom of Religion or Belief

In 2005, the Human Rights Center partnered with the Tandem Project to develop and release Lifting the Spirit: Human Rights and Freedom of Religion or Belief, an educational manual designed for use in secondary classrooms, religious institutions, youth advocacy organizations, and other community settings around the world.

In Memoriam: Michael Roan

In memory of Michael’s work and dedication to human rights principles (especially as related to freedom of religion or belief), the Human Rights Center is delighted and honored to make portions of the Tandem Project’s archives available for public use, as well as to offer additional thematically related material. We hope that this collection will inspire advocates, scholars, students, and others who strive for freedom of religion or belief as defined by international human rights norms.
