The University of Minnesota negotiates with vendors to obtain licenses for popular and current software at discounted prices. In this way it can be leased from the vendor, which can be much more economical than purchasing it. Software licenses include all vendor upgrades during the software license period. Purchased software rarely includes these upgrades.

OIT has paid for a maintenance contract for Adobe Acrobat Pro. The maintenance contract allows 8.1 users to upgrade to 9.0, free of charge, until August, 2009. If you have Adobe Acrobat Pro 8.1, and would like the free upgrade to 9.0, please send an e-mail to software@umn.edu. Include your Internet ID, operating system (Windows or MacOS) and that you are interested in the free upgrade from 8.1 to 9.0 in the e-mail. Active Directory (AD) is a centralized directory service used to manage networked computers and centralized file storage resources across the University. Using Active Directory, individuals and units have access to centralized network file storage that complies with University security standards, and which is backed up systematically to reduce the risk of lost data. A directory service is a software application — or a set of applications — that stores and organizes information about a computer network's users and network resources, and that allows network administrators to manage users' access to those resources. Several methods are available for individuals and for applications to access data stored in the University’s central identification hub: the X.500 directory. The University of Minnesota provides common-good, Internet access, e-mail accounts, and personal web space to all eligible students, staff, and faculty. The Office of Information Technology provides timely and cost-effective enterprise report archiving and delivery through the Enterprise Document Management System (EDMS). EDMS delivers pre-defined Enterprise System reports to users' desktops for viewing and printing. It is not meant to replace or compete with the University's Data Warehouse or Web Reporting capabilities. More information about EDMS.

ImageNow is the University’s comprehensive imaging and document management system. Documents can be scanned or captured in their native format such as Microsoft Office files. They can be linked with records automatically at scan time or manually in a single-click process. These documents can be routed automatically or manually depending on the needs and business processes of the department. They can be retrieved by simply launching the ImageNow application.
