Human Rights Education: The 4th R, Human Rights Education

The International Campaign to Ban Landmines seeks to create a forum to which young people may add their voices to those calling for a ban on these weapons.
Students who are at least 12 years old and less than 23 years old by the deadline of May 15, 1996 may enter a poster. The poster may be worked on in pairs. Prizes will be awarded in three age groups: 12-15, 16-18, and 19-22 years old.
Entries must be postmarked no later than midnight, May 15, 1996. Entries sent after that date will be disqualified.

Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people acting on the convictions that governments must not deny individuals their basic human rights and that ordinary men and women can effectively pressure governments to live up to their commitments in human decency. The organization was awarded the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to promote global observance of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. AIs effectiveness depends on its impartial application of a single standard of human rights to every country in the world.
The World Wide Web is growing at an almost unbelievable rate and there is no indication that the trend will be slowing down anytime soon. The power of the Web to distribute information quickly and efficiently is now being used more and more by human rights-related organizations to call attention to human rights abuses and to educated people about human rights.
University of Minnesota Human Rights Library
The University of Minnesota Human Rights Library contains a collection of over ninety of the most important international human rights instruments, treaties, declarations, adjudicative decisions, and human rights educational materials as well as other materials together with authoritative citations. The site is searchable by keywords and has links to many other human rights related sites.
Amnesty International
Amnesty International offers several Internet services, from gophers to Web sites. In addition, they provide links to other sites located on IGC (Institute for Global Communications) servers, including PeaceNet, EcoNet, ConflictNet, and WomensNet.
AIUSA Human Rights Educators Network has been working for years to spread the understanding and advocacy of rights to children and adults. You can develop your role as a human rights educator by becoming a member of the Educators Network and asking others to join. Dues are $10 a year to help pay for The Fourth R, which you receive twice a year. Membership also provides a regional network newsletter and a directory of network members in your region.
Future Issues of The Fourth R will be sent only to members of the Network or the North American Partners for Human Rights Education.
