Announcing Human Rights Here and Now
A new teaching resource in honor of the 50th Anniversary of theUDHR

As the 50th anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) approaches in 1998, most Americans remain unaware of this document, the foundation stone of all human rights.

To address that lack of knowledge, Amnesty International USA, in collaboration with the Stanley Foundation and Human Rights USA, will publish a new teaching resource on December 10,1997: Human Rights Here and Now! Celebrating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Written by a team of educators from Amnesty’s Human Rights Educators’ Network, the book provides background information, ideas for taking action, interactive exercises to help people learn about human rights, and an annotated bibliography of human rights education resources.

The word “Here” in Human Rights Here and Now means the USA. This book is a tool for bringing the UDHR into the lives of individuals in the USA in a wide range of settings. The word “Now” recognizes the 50th anniversary year of the UDHR and emphasizes that human rights is a long-awaited idea whose time has come!

Sample exercises are included in this issue of the Fourth R on pages 11-16.
